American Dream
Cristina Santos

Cristina Santos and her husband, Jorge Corona, are setting good examples for their two children, Jorge Jr., 3, and Anthony, 2. Cristina attends school nightly to complete her education; Jorge already has his diploma. One day soon, they hope to have a home of their own. They have other dreams, as well. They long to give their children a better life.

Cristina and Jorge moved to Austin from the Rio Grande Valley two years ago in search of better opportunities and a brighter future. Cristina works for a property management company; Jorge works for a carpet shampooing company; however, times are slow and so is business.

Even with a dual income, Cristina and Jorge cannot afford the health insurance offered by Cristina's employer. And it's no wonder-with the high price of rent, childcare and other bills, many families are in the same predicament. It's a slippery slope that often leaves the Santos-Corona family at the mercy of the Emergency room.

But they have found some relief at Seton Topfer Community Health Center. The children receive regular checkups at the Center, and were recently enrolled in the Children's Health Insurance Program. The sliding-scale fees at the Center help the family manage medical bills that could otherwise squelch their dreams.

"We're working hard to set a good example for our children," says Cristina. "I want to go farther than my parents. I want the same for my children."
