The unique collaboration with Austin Independent School District allows clinical staff from Children's Hospital to ensure appropriate medical services in the schools and help identify children in need of primary care homes.
The first of its kind in the nation, this model program, nationally recognized by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, serves more than 80,000 students throughout Austin's schools.
Each school has a Student Health Services Team made up of a registered nurse and a school health assistant who provide health services. Although the nurse is not on campus at all times when services are available, he or she trains and supervises the school health assistant in performing routine health services, and can be reached by phone and pager when not on campus.
