Politicians and health care advocates continue to debate solutions for care of the uninsured at the state and national level. Locally SETON realized it had to make immediate internal changes to better respond to the challenges in Central Texas, including the rising numbers of uninsured, higher costs to treat patients and lower reimbursements from managed care.
While SETON's internal changes have reduced the rate of growth of operating expenses, this is only a short-term fix to a growing problem. SETON and other health care providers cannot do this alone. Central Texas needs to find a community-wide solution to provide its people access to health care so they can function better at their jobs, in school and at home and have peace of mind that help is available if they need it.
